BRO Life Champs!

October 24-25, 2009

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Psychos won their first tournament of the season with a 6-1 record over the course of the weekend. Dressed to the theme of the tournament, the Psychos had an extremely fun weekend full of winning and goofing around.

With a team of about a dozen returnees, the Psychos traveled up to Cal State Long Beach to take part in their first ever Best Regret of Your Life (BRO Life) Tournament. With only 6 teams in attendance, the Psychos prepared themselves to play each team at least once throughout the course of the weekend.

Saturday morning, the Psychos faced the San Diego State Cha Chas in a competitive first game. With a much larger and more experienced squad than last year, the Cha Chas looked like a formidable opponent. Coached by an ex-Psycho coach, the Cha Chas played aggressively, but the Psychos took the win and prepared for their next game.

Saturday’s second game was an easier matchup for the Psychos as they played the newly formed Cal Poly Pomona Lucky Charms. With only 2 experienced players and the remainder of the team composed of rookies, the Charms showed to be a young team. The Psychos took the victory quickly in this game though it was not due to a lack of effort on the Charms’ part.

Next, the Psychos faced a tough Long Beach State No Regrets team, a favorite opponent of the Psychos due to the friendly competition. This No Regrets team is larger and more experienced than ever before and it definitely showed as the Psychos worked to pull out the win. Long Beach State captain and tournament director Patricia “Igloo” Anderson played exceptionally and ran a great tournament to boot.

For the final Saturday game, the Psychos played a small but resilient Cal Poly SLO Motion. The Psychos got off to a slow start and could never recover though they did give SLO a run for their money before the cap horn went off. SLO handed the Psychos their first and only loss of the weekend.

Sunday morning, the Psychos played the Redlands Jillalopes in the final game of pool play. The Jillalopes had a larger team than last year but were missing one of their captains to studying abroad. Although the Jillalopes ran hard and were pretty athletic, the Psychos were able to finish them off quickly. With the fast game, the Psychos had time to rest and regroup before bracket play began.

As the second seed, the Psychos played the third-seeded SDSU Cha Chas once again in the semi-final bracket. The Cha Chas had just come off a tough loss against SLO but re-energized before the game so they came out ready to go. The Psychos went down early but came back quickly to take half and never looked back. Katie “Kacto” Kessler was extremely impressive handling in this game and helped the team cruise to victory and their place in the finals.

In the finals game, the Psychos faced Cal Poly SLO once again. With the memory of their loss the day before, the Psychos came out fired up and ready to go. Though there were some long points, the Psychos played well and ended up winning by a significant margin. Rosalind “Dada” Tsao, Lindsey “Naya” Wholey, and Karishma “Dwade” Oza stepped it up this game and handled like seasoned veterans though most of them are new to the position.

Overall this past weekend was a success and it was obvious that many players worked hard over the summer and improved leaps and bounds from last year. Jane “Austen” Griffin was a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the disc, snatching the disc away from her girl to get D’s and skying girls on O to save junk throws. Linda “DK” Vo battled through and ankle injury and was clutch on offense grabbing discs that seemed out of reach. Sarah Skye “Joule” McNees was impressive on defense as usual but her jumping skills seemed markedly improved. Also, she looked sharp in her muscle tee and her shirt seemed to have some good ventilation going. Second-year player, Alisa “Cuervo” Tanakit played amazing defense over the course of the entire weekend. Excellent speed and a drive to get every disc made her a player to be reckoned with. She played extremely well this past weekend and learned a lot making the correct cuts and seeing the field well. Dorothy “Tidal” Chung stepped it up and handled when asked and remained calm under pressure. That is an impressive feat considering the fact that she is only a second-year. Radha “Ritz” Karra ran hard all of Saturday, giving it her all knowing she would not be able to play on Sunday. Jean “Mahi” Ni improved immensely from last year and showed a new confidence that kept her cool under pressure and assertive on both defense and offense. She has a bright future for this season and everyone is excited to see what she can do. Sarika “Zazu” Tandon is another second-year who really stepped it up this weekend. Zazu handled once in a while and cut effectively. Last but not least, Margaret “Penny” Gray showed up on Sunday ready to play every point and definitely did not look the least bit tired through the three games. She handled well and cut well to boot. Her throws were looking excellent and it shows that she put in a lot of work over the summer.

At the end of the day, the Psychos were ecstatic and exhausted from the weekend but for many, this tournament was their first ever championship as Psychos and they could not be more proud.

First Practice

It’s time!

Our first practice will be on Thursday, October 1 from 6:30pm-9:30pm on Warren Field East (Warren Field is by Canyonview Pool and 6th College and the east field is closest to the freeway).  Anyone is welcome to attend and no prior frisbee experience is required.  If you have class that goes until after practice starts, just come after class.

Don’t forget to wear athletic gear and bring cleats (if you have them or else running shoes will do just fine for now), water, a light shirt, and a dark shirt.  If you can, please do not wear a gray shirt.

Dear Southwest Women’s Teams,

The UCSD Psychos are pleased to announce that the So Cal Warm-Up will be held on November 21-22 at UC San Diego. We are now accepting bids for the women’s division on a rolling basis. The cost is $225 for one team or $400 for two teams. The Psychos will provide free housing for teams that are interested.

3.      Number of bids requesting
4.      Whether or not your team would like housing (include approximate number of players)
